In Costa Rica, the common saying is "Pura Vida," or "Pure Life." This saying embodies many meanings like,
"All Good," "No Worries," "Purity in Life," and "Take it Easy." It stands for having a positive outlook
on life, and feelng appreciation for what you have.
Here at Pure Life Martial Arts, we like to focus on the good things in life. It's all about family, friends,
and feeling happy.
Pure Life Martial Arts was founded in February 2016 and is led by main instructor Henry Matamoros. Henry is a black
belt under Master Pedro Sauer, who is a direct black belt of Grand Master Helio Gracie, and his son, Grand Master
Rickson Gracie. Helio is renowned for being one of the founding fathers of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil during the early
1900s. Pedro became a pioneer of Jiu Jitsu in America in the early 1990s.
With over 25 years of Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, and Judo experience, Henry Matamoros has competed professionally
in Mixed Martial Arts and established himself in the Midwest as the "Don of Jiu Jitsu" for being the first
to use the style exclusively in the ring. After a decade and a half in the Milwaukee area, Denver is now home
to the Costa Rican native. In May 2016, Henry was awarded his 3rd degree by Rickson Gracie, famed Mixed Martial
Artist, Jiu Jitsu player, and Professor. Henry also has the privilege of being the first black belt in Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu in Wisconsin and Costa Rica.
Robert Sanchez Jr. is a 1st degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His dedication and training in this sport
began at the young age of 16 under the tutelage of Mark Johnson, the first North American black belt of Helio
“Soneca” Moreira. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a lifestyle and a life long journey that Robert embraced as a young
man, and he continues to evolve as a martial artist and teacher.
Early on in his career Robert realized his dream was to share the sport of Jiu Jitsu since it had changed his
life in so many ways. He has an innate talent for teaching the basic to the most complex movements that constitute
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Many individuals are very good at their profession in Jiu Jitsu, but few have the ability
to teach their expertise at all levels similar to Robert. Robert has a rare gift and he has successfully developed
that gift into his passion.
With over 16 years of martial arts experience including Boxing, Thai Boxing, Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Robert
lives by the motto “Just Train”. He has competed extensively in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Thai Boxing, remaining
undefeated in the latter. Robert enjoys molding his students, who share this desire to compete, into the best
version of themselves for competition. As Robert will tell you, a good competitor focuses on preparation and
mindset. All the skills in the world won’t save you from a confident, well-prepared, lessor skilled opponent.
As with life, confidence is crucial to success, and training with Robert will shape both your skills and outlook
into that strong, well balanced confidence.

Our Jiu Jitsu class for children teaches values that develop character and physical skills. Children are

"Jiu Jitsu," translated as "the gentle art," is a grappling-based martial art that uses technique to empower
someone with less strength than their opponent. The Gi is the traditional and formal training attire of
the originators of Jiu Jitu, and simulates street clothing, like the sleeves and collar of a jacket or
longsleeve shirt. By using the grips on the material in strategic ways, technique is enhanced. Proper Gi
techniques easily adapt to No Gi moves, but tend to slow things down a bit to focus on details. Required:
Jiu Jitsu Gi uniform (includes belt), mouth guard recommended.
No Gi Jiu Jitsu offers both basic and advanced moves to Jiu Jitsu players looking to train without the use
of Gi grips. This style of grappling is commonly used in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and focuses on control
by directly gripping the limbs. Mouth guard recommended.
Open Mat sessions require a $20 drop-in fee to non-members.
(Must be at least 18 or accompanied by an adult.)
